Una de las herramientas más valiosas a disposición de los urólogos es la sonda foley, denominada así en honor del inventor, un médico norteamericano, Federico Foley. Este maravilloso invento salio al mercado en 1934. Consiste, fundamentalmente, en tubo de goma, hueco y flexible de dos canales que permite que la orina, la sangre, el fluido de irrigación se drenen permanentemente de la vejiga.
Un canal en la pared de la sonda se conecta a un pequeño balón, que cuando se hincha en el interior de la vejiga con 10 mililimetros de agua, impide que la sonda se desprenda.
En el otro extremo del catéter se encuentra una bolsa para la orina, esta se sujeta a la pierna y debe vaciarse cada tres o cuatro horas. Se utiliza para drenar temporalmente la vejiga en aquellos casos que no es posible orinar con normalidad. También pueden utilizarse de forma permanente en aquellos pacientes que han perdido el control de las funciones normales de la vejiga. Muchos individuos llevan una sonda Foley cuando están sometidos a tratamiento por aumento de próstata o por prostatitis, también en ocasiones antes de llevar a cabo una intervención quirúrgica de próstata, y siempre después de la misma (temporalmente).
